Title: The Nineteen Tone Scale

Abstract

This report deals with the topic music, and explains the underlying theory that the tone scales and musical notation used today are based on. The Western world has standardized a system in which an octave is divided into twelve parts. But a division in 19 parts has been put forth as an interesting alternative. This 19 tone scale is the main focus of this report and a comparative study between it and the 12 tone scale is carried out. To this end the music programming language ChucK is used. Also, as a part of this study, an instrument prototype is implemented. The results show that the two tone scales can be considered equivalent, thus making a switch from the 12 tone scale to the 19 tone scale unjustified.
