Eyetracking: Is eyetracking the future of gaming?

Tobias Nyholm, Hannes Hagman

Abstract

The technology behind eyetracking is at the moment highly appreciated on the market. Today we use eyetracking in areas such as marketing and health care, but those areas are not enough. Every day around the globe different companies are trying to broaden these areas and now it is our turn to help them. We would like to revolutionize the way of gaming by introducing eyetracking into the console based gaming market. This report answers the questions, Is it possible to develop an eye-controlled game for the console based market and what impact would it have on the market itself?

In order to answer these questions we have created a connection between an eyetracker from Tobii Technology AB and an Xbox 360. In order to demonstrate that this connection works we have also developed an Xbox 360 game using the XNA-framework. The purpose of the game is to introduce the user to the new technology and to show them that there is a whole new way of controlling a game.

The second part of the report investigates if this will in fact be the future of gaming. This is done by literature studies reviewing earlier studies that have been made in the area. We have also conducted several interviews to see if the market are ready for the new technology. The interviews have been with both producers from the leading companies in the gaming area in Sweden and consumers who have tried out our game for themselves.
