A nineteen tone scale synthesizer – The design and implementation of an interactive software instrument for comparing equal temperaments

Abstract

The thesis encapsulate the design and implementation of an interactive software synthesizer, built with the intent to serve as an accessible tool for exploring an alternative music tuningsystem, 19-TET.

Fairly large portions of the text aim to summarize and explain certain principles of music theory, in order to provide readers unfamiliar with the subject a foundation of knowledge.

Although musical tuning systems can be compared and discussed purely theoretically, which is also done in this thesis, actually hearing the differences was considered more interesting. This is the reason for which the instrument was developed.

Although the work does not include any comparative study of the tunings as such, the instrument developed is intended to be of help during such studies. The larger challenge within the course of this project has been designing the instrument's user interface. This could be considered the main goal of the project.
