This thesis discusses the concept of spatial data, and focuses on a theoretical example to demonstrate the
need for unique ways of modeling and representing such data. PostGIS is used to extend PostgreSQL to
solve the presented problem and demonstrate methods for optimizing the solution queries. The behavior of
PostGIS is studied and commented on, indicating there is still a long way to go before this kind of data
can be handled in an equally straightforward manner as more traditional data.
