Tillämpade numeriska metoder I, tilnum1-09

Information for the course tilnum1-09

The course Applied Numerical Methods I starts on
Wednesday Jan 14th at 13-15 in E3. Welcome!/Lennart Edsberg

Sign up for the course DN2220:signup.html

Lecturer: Lennart Edsberg, edsberg@csc.kth.se

Teaching Assistant: Oana Marin, oanam@kth.se

Course litterature

1) Textbook:"Introduction to computation and modeling for Differential Equations"
Lennart Edsberg, Wiley, 2008, available at KTH's bookstore, price SEK 650
All labtexts but the last are contained in the textbook.

2) Recommended texts on SVD, DFT and DCT on the web:
Singular Value Decomposition with applications (P C Hansen),
Discrete Fourier Transform: DFT matrix (Wikipedia),
Discrete Cosine Transform: JPEG (Transform Compression) (S W Smith).

Last year the compendium by Gerd Eriksson, Kompendium i tillämpade numeriska metoder, was used. This text is in Swedish.

Computer labs

Directions for written reports to LAB 1 and LAB 2 are found here .

LAB 1 consists of the part "Solution of ODE systems with constant coefficients" at pg 216-217 in the textbook AND lab 2, pg 218-221 in the textbook.
A pdf-file is available here
Recommended deadline for submitting the report of Lab 1 is Friday Feb 6th.
Please send the report as a pdf-file to oanam@kth.se
LAB 2 consists of Lab 4 and Lab 5 in the textbook.
A pdf-file is available here.
Recommended deadline for LAB 2 is Friday Feb 27th.
Please send the report as a pdf-file to oanam@kth.se
LAB 3 (sw), LAB 3 (eng): Applications of SVD, DFT and DCT on image compression.
LAB 3 will be examined at the computer. The course catalogue /info/tilnum1-09 contains the files needed to LAB3. You can also find the files here: Matlabfiler.

THE PROJECT will be treated after the exam in period 4. It is performed in groups of two persons. The project is examined with an oral presentation (about 15 minutes). No written report is needed, but a paper copy of the OHs or Power-point presentation must be handed to Lennart the day before the seminar.

There will be an extra exam Wed June 3rd, 13-18 in room 4523

If you are interested you must contact edsberg@cscs.kth.se before that date.

The exam is based on chapters 2,3,6,7 in the textbook. The appendices 2,5 are part of the course and therefore important. The part of the course dealing with numerical algebra will be lectured by Gerd Eriksson and she will guide you in the preparation to the exam of that part.
The exam can be prepared by treating the study questions found here. You can skip the questions 1,2,3,25-31,39,42,49,55-60.
The following in an example of a written exam. Solutions to the problems are found here. Skip example 3 and 4. More examples of exams are found at http://www.csc.kth.se/utbildning/kth/kurser/DN2225/
Skip the problems that are parts of chapter 4,5,8 and 9.
