Initiation of movement, steering and desision making. 2004-date :: Modeling vertebrate locomotor system. :: Knowledge of the mechanisms and functions of the swimming CPG of lamprey to be applied to legged locomotion. :: Population nature of "unit oscillators" located in every small trunk of the spinal cord is essential for shaping the locomotor output. Ability of an inhomogenious population of neurons to produce continuous, stable and robust patterns of activity is studied in mathematical modeling and computer simulations. A varied level of model complexity is used for each cell and for the entire network. Full-scale simulations of a distributed spinal locomotor network are performed on super-computer platforms at PDC KTH using computational tools developed at CB CSC KTH. :: It is recently shown that choice of a particular locomotor mode in lamprey can be achieved by central command applied to the most rostral part of the spinal network, while the precise shape of the pattern with finely tuned phase relations can be maintained by the local circuits along the spinal cord. 2000-2004 :: Realistic large scale modeling of spinal CPG of lamprey and parallel simulations. :: Controlling swimming patterns in the spinal CPG of lamprey---turning behavior.
