Aims and goals

This graduate course addresses core themes in interdisciplinarity in research, development and education. The historical emergence of interdisciplinarity is described in the dynamics with disciplinarity. A wide range of perspectives from e.g. anthropology and sociology of education/knowledge, theory of science, science studies and others are used in order to portray the often heated debates and incentives surrounding the ideology and practice of interdisciplinarity and its implementations. In the course, we aim to identify the conditions that promote and hinder the development of interdisciplinarity. This will be studied partly through concrete case studies of contexts for interdisciplinarity as well as the literature which brings forth its possibilities, problems and paradoxes. Emphasis will be put also on the socio-political context of research, development and education in an era that is often described as “knowledge society”.

The goal of the course is to give graduate students an understanding of the problems and possibilities of interdisciplinarity in a specific context. Another goal is that students should be able to develop their own position re: disciplinarity/interdisciplinarity which are relevant for their dissertation work.
