Memory isolation for virtual machines - a hypervisor study

Abstract

Virtualization has yet again received more attention due to cloud computing. Companies are presented the opportunity to lower the cost when using cloud computing, security is an important question for the companies planning to introduce cloud computing. It is therefore important that the information stored in the cloud is kept isolated. The isolation is obtained through the virtualization that the cloud is based on. This report studies two well known hypervisors Xen and VMWare. The report examines the techniques used in those two hypervisors to isolate the memory. The report also studies the virtualization support given by hardware manufacturers AMD and Intel.
