Elderly and card payments on the Internet
Abstract
Internet usage continues to increase in all parts of society and every individual will most likely need to be able to use the Internet unhindered within the near future, just to remain independent. The fact that the solutions currently used for card payment on the Internet aren’t adapted for use by the elderly, and the fact that the possibility to change them is close to non-existent, poses a real threat to exclude the elderly from this type of services.
This study was conducted as a means of combating digital exclusion of the older users. The goal was to write a set of guidelines that could be applied to card payment services or other similar services.
The project consists of two parts, a literature review and interviews with industry experts and researchers in the field, and a more practical part during which we conducted observations of older users in a natural context. The results were compiled and used as initial values for two different payment service prototypes, one which was a version of a current solution and one which was a more innovative variant. The prototypes were assessed in a focus group to verify the results. The findings include a number of guidelines relevant to future interface and transaction developers who specialize on the older end users, and how these can be applied in practice.
