Early in the process we realised that we both were interested in the design of the brochures we had got in our mail recently. They were brochures from different small companies in our neighbourhood, and most often the companies were pizza restaurants. We started to wonder about the reasons why they looked the way they did. As none of us thought that they looked very pretty, we started to ask ourselves questions. Who is the designer? What did he or she think while designing?
None of these questions are especially interesting to write a whole essay about. We then came up with the idea of investigating whether the design of a brochure is important or not.
In this thesis we report all kinds of advice there is to find about designing advertisements and brochures for a small company. Then we present results from our own study about how important the design is, and what in the design that makes the difference of how you think of it.
The study consists of a survey, answered by 57 people, with questions about the design of five different pizza brochures, as we have chosen to use pizza restaurants as a case for this issue. In the survey we asked both short checkbox questions but also questions where the respondent had the possibility to give a longer answer, as we both wanted to know what people thought about different aspects of this phenomenon, and why they had these opinions.
The results show that the design of a brochure is of some importance. Some responders claimed that they could choose another restaurant if the brochure was not satisfactory. But the results also show that in comparison to other factors, like price, location and taste, the design of the brochure is a lot less important.
