The tv-sofa is used in many homes as a social meeting place where family, friends and acquaintances can watch tv-shows together and socialize. Since the last few years of breakthrough of social media this social meeting place has been expanded and can be shared with viewers from all over the world. In this paper we investigate how the user habits of Facebook and Twitter in Sweden look like while watching tv. Through our research methods, a survey and a focus group, we have gathered data to make connections and conclusions regarding to what extent, how and why Facebook and Twitter are used while watching tv. According to results in this research Facebook is used more frequently in context of tv than Twitter, but Facebook is mostly used for other purposes than discussing a tv-show that is being watched. Twitter is more common for this use and is to a large extent used as a channel to communicate with other viewers. Important happenings and events that are aired and watched by many viewers at the same time lead to increased activity on Facebook and Twitter. Activity occurs in different forms of participation and communication regarding the tv-show. The reason for using Faceboook and Twitter to communicate regarding tv-shows is the opportunity to take part of other users opinions and to express your own thoughts and through this use you are able to reach a higher level of participation and a bigger engagement.
